Where I’m from maternity leave starts no later than 28 days before the due date. In my case that was 14th December. But since we had some construction going on at home on Thursday and Friday those days didn’t really feel like leave. So I’m counting 18th December as my first day of maternity leave.
Leaving work was a little bit weird. Whenever I thought of the fact that I wouldn’t be returning to the office for a whole year, a mix of panic and sadness struck. Whenever I thought of the fact that Thursday I wouldn’t be going to work, I was delighted. Maybe it’s because the holidays are approaching. So it doesn’t really feel like maternity leave right now but more like a regular holiday. And I really needed a regular holiday.
The day started marvelously! I slept 20 minutes more than usual and there was no rushing since daddy didn’t have any early meetings and so we weren’t bound by a schedule. This lack of hurry had an incredible effect on the little one who didn’t cause any problems and got ready all by himself and with a smile. I had a delicious breakfast ready and waiting for me and these two things just made my morning. It was a bliss, truly. We then dropped the little one at kindergarten together, dropped Mr. Daddy at work with his breakfast and finally I returned home all alone. I’m never home alone so the prospect feels pretty good. At least short term.
While we’re on the topic of breakfasts, I made a kale, banana, apple, chia seeds smoothie for Daddy and then added oats to the mixture for me.Both waited patiently for us in the fridge overnight. It’s a thing I do quite often actually. He prefers something drinkable that he can take to work. I’m more of a breakfast person and like to sit down and eat. Also, I need something more filling. So combining a smoothie with oats is the quickest way to do both.
I had a couple of errands to run, cleaned up a bit of a mess in the living room and then just chilled for a while. Then I suddenly remembered: workouts were not restricted to the evening anymore. I was free to do some exercising whenever. I took my time, actually changed into workout clothes and got my gear. For the record, I usually do my pregnancy workouts in the same sweatpants I wear to hang at home, I just remove my socks and a couple of upper layers. It felt good to have proper gear! I almost felt not pregnant. Another thing I did was to remove my ring. I never take it off but my fingers are starting to swell in the evening which makes it a bit uncomfortable so I just took this fitness opportunity to address this issue as well. And last but not least, I took off my double tour leather Apple Watch band and replaced it with the white silicone one that the watch originally came with. With that my sporty transformation was complete.
After the workout, I took a shower. A very long hot shower that seemed to be going on forever. No race with the clock to try and turn in at a decent hour, no curious heads popping up at the door with questions. Pure bliss.
Then it was time for a walk, With Monday, She stayed with my parents for the previous three weeks and I am beyond happy to have her back. I missed our little doggie so much! We went for a 2km walk and she seemed pleased. Also tired. She dropped on the carpet as soon as we arrived home and caught some ZZZs.
By that time it was 3 p.m. already and I wanted to pick up little one. But at the last minute, I realized it was Monday, which means he has his P.E. class after kindergarten and does not finish until 4:30. I couldn’t believe it was my first day and already I had lost the feel for different days of the week, Catastrophe. Still, I used the extra hour to catch up on my reading and then went on to get some groceries and finally pick up my little one.
For the two of us, the plan for the day was to make Christmas cookies. I tried to persuade him to postpone this activity to another day since we were so late already, but he was so looking forward to it that he was dead set on the damn cookies., So we made them. At least one batch. We save the rest of the batter for tomorrow. And didn’t manage to decorate them. We did, however, manage to eat them all. They were delicious and he was happy and that’s what’s important, right?
