It’s that time of the year again! The weather is nicer and we spend more time outside and the sun is getting stronger and stronger. So if you haven’t yet, it’s most definitely time to start wearing sunscreen.
Once upon a time when most of my skincare products were from Clinique (I still love you guys!), my moisturizer of choice was Superdefense for combination to oily skin. I used it for years and it is still a product I would highly recommend. But then I got into Korean skincare and stopped with my Clinique obsession and started exploring. Most of the things I use these days are half the price but just as high in quality if not better. There is, however, a big difference between the two: Superdefense has SPF 25, Korean moisturizers rarely contain any. They don’t because sunscreen is a separate step in their million step skincare routine but for us people with simpler habits this is a huge disadvantage. So with Superdefense I wore sunscreen year round. Nowadays I don’t.
But this is something I can only afford during winter and truth be told this year I am quite late with adopting this practice. But better late than never!
Here’s what I am currently using and why.
Both sunscreens pictured are Safe Blocks by Missha. Of course again with a Korean brand, what did you expect? 🙂
The pink one is Essence Sun, with an SPF of 45 and triple + UVA protection. As the name suggests it also contains some essence, so it’s not just a sunscreen but also a treatment. It’s a bit heavier than the blue one and also thicker but still quite a light cream and glides effortlessly across your face for a very easy application. The scent is light and very nice, does not remind me of sunscreen at all. This is the one I use.
Coincidentally while the pink is for me, the blue one is for the boys. It’s the Aqua Sun Gel, with an SPF of 50 and quadruple + UVA protection. Even though the name says gel it’s not gelly at all. It is, however, one of the lightest creams I have ever used. It is almost instantly absorbed and leaves no stickiness, which is why I ordered one for the guys. This one has almost no scent at all, another plus for them.
Both come in 50ml packages which is why we only use these as everyday face creams and not something for the beach. I love these and I buy them every year because they’re effective, I love their texture and they are convenient to carry around even in smaller bags. I do however have some alternative suggestions if you prefer.
Other great sunscreens
After that intro did you really think I would not include one from Clinique?
SPF 30 only gives 1% lower protection than SPF 50 and this one is light, silky and works great under makeup. I haven’t used this for a while though and the web page says it’s a new formulation. But I am counting on Clinique and am quite confident that it is as good or better than the one I last used.
Another good option from them is the City Block. There are two versions, the City Block Sheer (SPF 25) and Super City Block (SPF 40). Both tried and tested, both really good.
Technically this is a sunscreen for kids and this is precisely why I bought it in the first place. But then when we were on vacation and exploring around I didn’t want to carry separate products so we ended up using this one as well.
And you know what? It’s way better than the adult versions.
It’s lighter, has no perfume, can be applied to wet skin and resists water very well so it’s an all-around perfect solution for the beach/pool.
